The Seven Endangered Indonesian Birds


1.      Blue Paradise

Blue Paradise/Paradisaea rudolphi which has an average shape with a length of 30 cm. This bird spreads around the mountain range of east and southeast Papua new Guinea. Blue Paradise has dark and blue colors with a bluish-white beak. Its eyes are brown, there are a half semicircle at both eyes with grey legs. The wings are light blue. Blue paradise is a polygamy species. The male will make a ritual sucha as dancing while showing off its plumage. It is different from the other paradises, this kind of bird does not dance in a group. the male paradise will hang himself on a branch. Paradise’s food consists of fruits and many kinds of insects.



2.      Red Paradise

Red Paradise/Paradisaea rubra is a type of warbler-sized, with a length of about 33cm, from the clan Paradisaea. Indonesian endemic, the Red Paradise is found only in lowland forests on the island and Batanta Waigeo in Raja Ampat, West Irian Jaya province. In looking for the partner, similarly it is same as blue paradise.
Red Paradise has yellow and brown colors with a yellow beak. Adult males are about 72 cm including the red blood and white tip on the side of its stomach ornate feathers. Its head is green like emerald and has a tail consists of a pair of  long gyres like strings with black color. The females are smaller than males, with a dark brown face and had no fur trimmings.


3.      Blue Peacock
Blue peacock or Indian peacock/Pavo cristatus is one of three species of peacocks. Blue peacock’s feather has shiny dark blue feather. Adult males can reach 230cm in length, with a very long tail covered by green metallic. The population of this bird spreads in forests with grasslands in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan. Formerly this species was also found in Bangladesh, but now probably extinct there. The male is polygamous species, having more than one spouse. In the breeding season, the male shows its tail off in front of the female. The tail opens to form propeller-shaped, around the tail there are spots with blue eyes. Female usually incubates three to six eggs.

Blue peacock’s food consists of a variety of grains, grass shoots and leaves, various insects, and other small animals such as worms, spiders and small lizards.Blue peacock is the national bird of India. This species also has an important role in the mythology of Buddhist, Hindu and other cultures.




4.      Balinese Starling
Balinese Starling or Leucopsar rothschildi warbler is a kind of medium size bird, with a length of approximately 25 cm from the tribe of Sturnidae. This is an endemic of Indonesia. Balinese Starling is found only in the forests of western Bali. This bird is also the only species endemic of Bali, in 1991 it was named for the fauna symbol of Bali province. The existence of these endemic species are protected by law.
Balinese Starling has special characteristics. It has white fur all over the body, except at the tip of the tail and wings are black. The cheeks are unfeathered, bright blue and legs grayish. Males and females are alike. Because of the beautiful and elegant appearance, Balinese starling becomes one of the most in demand by collectors and bird keepers. Caught wildly, forest loss, as well as the bird is found to be very limited. The population of this bird rapidly shrins and endangers species in a short time. To prevent this, most zoos around the world are running the Balinese starling breeding program.


5.      Cekakak Hutan Melayu
Cekakak has a unique and distinctive sound. In general, they are loud. Whistling highly and sounds "kwii-kwii ...". Interestingly,the whistle is produced in one tone per second. This kind of birds lives in the woods and hunts from low perches. Unlike the loud voice, the bird turns a bit shy. They are just looking for prey from the ground by turning the leaves. Cekakak has orange around the stomach and blue color at the back with a yellow peak.



6.      Black Wings Parrot
Black wings parrot, the name is a type of parrot Eos cyanogenia has medium size, with a length of about 30cm, from the tribe of Psittacidae. This bird is an endemic of Indonesia, the bird is only found in forest on the island of Biak coast and islands in the Gulf of Cenderawasih (Paradise). This species is often found, and nests in coconut plantations. This parrot has bright red hair, purple spots around the ears, yellowish red beak, black back and have a red iris. Males and females are alike.


7.      King Cockatoo 
This species lives at an altitude of 0-1520 meters above sea level, usually they live in groups. Cockatoo is generally long-lived, up to 60 years or more. Cockatoo inhabits in primary and secondary forests which are high from the forest edge. It also lives in monsoon forest (Nusa Tenggara), high forest heath, rare trees and shrubs cultivated lands rare tree. From sea level to an altitude of 900 m (Sulawesi), 1520 m (Lombok), 1000 m (Sumbawa). This bird has red cheeks and a big black beak. On its head there is a large crest that can be enforced. Female birds are similar to male birds.
